Social Clock
If I’m crazy
Then what are you
Contumely only to be contrary
A melody left as just a damn joke
Thoughts swelling inside your head
The quantity of your actions which way exceed guile
Acting under the name of freedom
Regulating the absolute majority
“Some shit is wrong with you”
I vented out at someone I couldn’t even see
Yet as many words be, does meaning cease to be
So my life just continues on
You’re the same though aren’t you?
You’ve noticed it yourself haven’t you?
Both of our heartstrings are
Not quite that weak
A train of thought that keeps expanding and
All of you who are full of biases
I can’t see any thread that connects us
Give me something to believe in
You can do that, can’t you
In singing of love with my entire soul
I’ll wrench the world void of affection
I have to put an end to this soon
Or else, else
It’s a twisted world
And it’s your funeral eh
Just let me do what I do
I beg you, I beg you.
Am I even crazy
Who even are you
Can’t you tell me
With that grand will of yours or something
Who’s being deceived
Is it me or is it the world
Do you have any good reason to say that
Hey, I’m talking about you
If you say that there’s some shit wrong with me
Then what is this bruise in my chest
Isn’t even the definition of happiness?
Supposed to be something that’s dissimilar for everybody
You’re different too aren’t you?
You’re thinking that this is weird too aren’t you?
The fact that both of our exhilarating emotions are
Just being blocked off like this
No matter how far I go, my days never change
If I’m not even allowed to doubt the coming days
Then why should I need something to cling to anymore
To extravagant selfishness
Say farewell, say farewell
I’m not expecting you to be anything
like an omnipotent existence but
Can’t you
just save me already
I’ve really had my full
Of twisted love already
You can just do as you please
Go for it, go for it.
Change can work on anybody or
Such shit has never ever come out of anyone’s mouth
Yet at some point it seems like it’s become
something like common sense
Hey
Is that what humans are all about
Oh you pretty proud world
Haven’t you thought that something is wrong
No matter how far I go, my days never change
As I’m not even able to doubt these days
A train of thought keeps expanding and
All of you who are full of biases
I can’t see any thread that connects us
Give me something to believe in
You can do that, can’t you
You can understand this, can’t you
You’re seeing this, aren’t you
I’m not expecting you to be anything
like an omnipotent existence but
Can’t you
just save me already, hey
In singing of love with my entire soul
In wrenching the world void of affection
Let’s put an end to this already
Let’s go, let’s go
It’s a twisted world
And it’s your funeral eh
Just let me do what I do
I beg you, I beg you.
Official Comments
The song where I really could sense you were experimenting with trial and error and playing around, is “Social Clock”.
Yumao: That was fun.
Shinoda: That was fucking fun.
Yumao: I was able to put in a gong in for the first time.
You used a real gong for that?
Yumao: Yep. One as big as ones they use in concert halls.
Shinoda: None of us thought he would whip that out.
wowaka: It was a pain to bring into the studio (laughing).
Shinoda: It sounded like a monster was gonna pop out from one simple rub of the thing.
While you were writing the song, did you feel that a gong was needed?
wowaka: Yeah (laughing). I thought “A gong would be perfect here!”. I just wanted it to be flashy. In the end we used the gong about 10 times in the song.
Yumao: It blends in surprisingly well.
Shinoda: What’s funny is that, once we added the gong the guitar also starts to sound resemblant.
wowaka: It gets an oriental ring to it, doesn’t it.
Shinoda: Yeah, it’s strange isn’t it. One hit of the gong can change so much.
wowaka: Like this too. 2 or 3 years ago I’m sure I would have said “A band using a gong is just weird”. Yet by listening to foreign music, I noticed an appeal I never had before, I went woah! I had about a year to digest all the ideas within me, and now I’m able to try such new things.
